Memorial Features

The Sleepy Lagoon Memorial is a landscape monument, not an object. Its components are: archival poems, contemplative seating places, fragments of the 1942 history, a garden of native plantings valuable to the Tongva people and valuable as animal habitat that will be cared for by volunteers.The memorial will also serve as a Stormwater Management feature to the park. It will be knit into the park context. See below to learn about the artistic features of the memorial.

  • 1. Bridge Crossing

    Designed walking path located on the existing park bridge. 1” of the existing bridge surface will be removed to include sandblasted patterns and inlaid brass on the walking path. Repaving may extend a few feet from the bridge.

  • 2. Interpretive Signage

    Signage will provide historical context to the memorial along with a project map and bilingual plant identification options. The larger signs will be made of raw steel with a replaceable screen print on metal plate. The plant I.D signs will be made of wood.

  • 3. Meditative Seating Areas

    Four colored concrete sculptures of tree stumps that function as semi-private seating areas. Sculptures will dot the project area and offer views of the swale.

  • 4. Whispering Wall & Bench

    A curved, concrete memorial bench that will include a tiled concrete bas relief mural with anti-graffiti coating.
